When you live every single day of your life with a condition such as IBS, you may no longer perceive ‘normal’ behaviour. IBS can become so entwined in your life that you do not think twice about making decisions based upon your IBS alone. For many it can start the moment they get up. It can often take IBS sufferers far longer to leave the house, due to their need to feel comfortable before they head off to work.
IBS sufferers may take different routes, go different places, all of which are related to their need to feel safe and comforted by the familiarity of their surroundings and in particular their ability to access a restroom. While this can be classed as a nuisance, it does not in itself constitute a major issue. You still get up, you still get to work and live your life, where avoidance becomes a factor is when you reject opportunities.
You may reject social opportunities, travel and even romantic opportunities if you feel that it may lead to an issue with your IBS.You will probably be missing out on many foods through avoidance, which is perfectly understandable, however do you wish to miss out on life as well ?
Getting from the comfortable position many IBS sufferers end up in, through to the position where they are able to enjoy life to the full is quite simply very difficult. You will have to find a way to eat, which works for you, you will have to find a way to live which works for you and you will have to confront the psychological damage IBS may have wrought.
This is all achievable, however it takes real courage and determination to get there. It also requires the acceptance that your IBS may be damaging your one chance on this planet. It is easy to forget as time goes by that we will never have that time again. If we are held captive by our IBS then that one time only opportunity can be lost.
Try and recognise the times when you make decisions for your IBS, not for you. If you can gain awareness of the ways in which your IBS is controlling your choices then you will gradually be able to focus on the task of overcoming IBS. It is similar to becoming aware of an addiction, in that you can not tackle it until you are aware of it.
We hope that your presence on this website suggests that you are ready and willing to make the changes necessary to enjoy your life to the full. We hope that we can help you.
